I am a Perth-based writer, director, filmmaker and collaborator. I am currently working as the artistic director of the Perth iteration of The Other Film Festival 20/21, a national digital inclusion festival providing a platform for Deaf and Disabled people to be leaders of storytelling; on the advisory committee of the Screenwest Diversity Leadership Group; developing the script and audio description for my film The Roadhouse Blues, the expansion of my short film ‘Turning to White’; and developing a collaborative, accessible audio project ‘Interface-D’, which responds directly to the creative sector in Western Australia, and centralises the place of audio description as an active, visceral, and fluid language for reading art.

As I worked to establish myself within the creative sector, I have also been an active advocate for disability leadership within the arts. In 2019, I collaboratively co-wrote and recorded ‘Objectivity & Language: The power of empathy in audio description’ for The Perth Festival, a conversation which renegotiates ableism and positions Blind people as the creative agents of their own accessible content. This project lead me to subsequently facilitate a lab around accessibility for the Perth Festival Connect Up Lab, at the Fremantle Arts Centre, where I reiterated the importance of considering accessibility in the pre-production of arts practice to ten young emerging West Australian-based artists. I have conducted similar labs for Vision Australia, DADAA, and at the Screenwest Digital Conference.

In 2018, I wrote and directed ‘Working Dog – How to find a new destination with your Seeing Eye (Guide Dog)’, a short instructional video interrogating the politics of disability as they are positioned within my experience of Blindness; specifically, exploring how to read the city using a Seeing Eye Dog for navigational purposes. This film signified my re-emergence into the film space, post the deterioration in my eyesight.

My relationship with The Other Film Festival dates to its inception in 2004, where I have participated as a guest speaker, panellist, film judge. Notably, my short documentary ‘Through Other People’s Eyes’ was selected for screening at the pilot The Other Film Festival.
